Fire chief puts life on the line to save victim in car crash

When an emergency medical worker, firefighter or other medical provider sees someone hurting, it's normal for him or her to put others first. This unusual story shows how important it is to some to put others before themselves, even when they're in life-threatening danger themselves.

In this story out of Alaska, a fire chief was in the midst of a heart attack when he stopped with emergency medical technicians to help an individual badly hurt on the side of the road. There had been a car crash, and the team happened upon it on the way to the hospital. The fire chief didn't miss a beat and ended up helping the badly hurt victim. They all rode to the hospital together.

Not long after arriving at the hospital, the fire chief suffered a heart attack. It turns out that he had been having a heart attack and needed surgery. He was airlifted to Anchorage where he received the life-saving operation.

Getting medical help when you're injured is the most important thing to do. For the people involved in this car accident, the involvement of the fire chief and EMTs may have prevented worsening injuries or deaths.

If you are involved in a crash in Alaska, remember that the first thing you should do is to call for help. If you're in an area where you can't get cellphone service, make sure someone stays by the roads or that you put out flares; that way, you can attract attention while attending to those who are injured. After getting medical help, you can pursue a claim to recover your losses.
