Teaching kids and teens: What to do in a car crash

Car crashes happen almost anywhere, and they immediately put a stop to whatever you were planning to do that day. You may have minor or serious injuries, depending on the crash, and you have to stay at the scene to handle what has just happened. If you have children, this is the point where you need to begin to assess your situation and call for help.

Car crashes result in over 30,000 deaths and 2 million injuries on average each year in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Some crashes are caused by or involve teens or children, who may not be as sure what to do next. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Small children

Small children likely can't help themselves in a crash, so it's important to talk to them before a crash ever happens about what to do if there is a collision. Unless there is an immediate risk to them, tell them to stay in their seats and to wait for help to arrive.

Teen drivers

Teen drivers aren't necessarily the drivers who will cause a crash, but after any crash, they still need to know what to do. Teens should know who to call in an emergency and be able to explain exactly where the crash took place. A teen needs to stay calm enough to call 911 and the dispatcher to say what happened and if anyone is injured.

Preparing for a car accident ahead of time means everyone has a better idea about what steps to take next. Prepare early, so the situation can become calmer.
