Childhood injuries cost billions each year

Children who are hurt suffer in many ways physically and mentally, but they also have economic issues to deal with. As they age, they may have a lesser ability to work or bring in an income, and socially, they may have longer bouts of isolation or difficulty being part of a group.

What's most important in terms of support is making sure that children who get hurt have the financial support needed to survive later in life. Even if it's just an amount of money that compensates them for a shorter period of time, it needs to be enough to make a difference.

In 2015, it was reported that the total medical costs related to injuries children suffered while 19 or younger was $6.6 billion. This includes things like the emergency transportation needed to get them to the hospital and the long-term care needed to support them as they age with disabilities.

The most costly childhood injury (likely due to its commonness) was falls. Falls accounted for around $1.1 billion of all childhood injury costs. Other common causes of injury included being struck by objects, poisoning, drowning, assault and burns.

What kinds of costs do children have as patients with significant injuries?

Costs may include:

  • Follow-up treatments
  • Rehabilitation
  • Nursing home stays
  • Claims administration expenses
  • Insurance claim expenses

When the injury is a result of another person's mistakes, then it's typically expected that they compensate the victim. Before you take a settlement, it's wise to look into how much care for your child will be in the future and if the settlement offer is enough.
