Choosing the right car seat for your child

One of the reasons that children are meant to ride in car seats is because of the safety they provide in a crash. Most child passengers are required to remain in safety seats until they are large enough to sit in a passenger seat with the seat belt fastened correctly. Once the seat belt fits without the use of a booster seat, children can use safety belts on their own.

Choosing the correct car or booster seat is an important part of your child's safety in a car crash. Here's a little more about the safety seats you should use.

Ages birth to 4

From the time of a child's birth until around the age of four, it is important to place your child in a rear-facing car seat. Your child can remain in this seat until they are the maximum weight for the car seat. It's best to keep children rear-facing for as long as you can.

Forward-facing seats

Forward-facing seats are used, typically, until the age of 5 or older. They are used after children outgrow the rear-facing seats and can remain in the safety seat until they are at the maximum weight limit.

Booster seats

Booster seats are used for children who have outgrown car seats but who are not yet large enough for the seat belt to rest in the appropriate position. Once they are 9 to 12 years old and at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall, children can move on to a normal seat belt and seat.

Using these tips, it's easier to keep your children safe on the road. If your child is injured in a car crash that was not your fault, you may have a civil case for damages against the at-fault driver. Your attorney can provide you with more information.
