How often do children fall?

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for most age groups. Adults often fall on the job, such as construction workers who fall off of ladders. Older adults often slip and fall in the home, and they wind up in the emergency room.

But what about young children? How often do they get injured in falls?

Of course, the issue is unique for every child, but experts estimate that each one falls around 500 times before they turn five years old. That's about 100 falls per year, or one fall every few days.

Naturally, many of these 500 falls are not very dangerous. When a child learns to walk, he or she could fall down dozens of times per day, but most of those falls just happen on the carpet at the house. Often, a parent is watching. No one gets injured.

As the child grows older, though, falls start to get more serious. Instead of falling at home while you're watching, for instance, your child could fall during recess at school. They could fall from playground equipment or down a flight of stairs.

The risk factors are no longer in your control. Is the school environment safe? Is that playground equipment up to code? Are the teachers actually watching the children when they're supposed to be? How quickly does anyone react when your child takes a serious fall?

These are all important questions to ask, especially if you get a call that your child is in the ER. As you sort through everything, make sure you know what legal rights you may have to compensation.
