Why do people drive without insurance?

You get into a car accident. As you get out to try to get the insurance information from the other driver, they attempt to leave the scene. After a few failed attempts, which only moves the car a hundred yards down the street, it's clear that it's too damaged to go any farther. The police arrive.

You're confused. Yes, they caused the accident, but why would they run? Then you find out that they were breaking the law and driving without car insurance.

As you consider your own health, you find yourself wondering why someone would take this risk and drive without insurance. Don't they understand how common car accidents are? Don't they know that they may need that policy, even if they've never used it before? Why risk it?

The reason may be purely financial. One report claimed that around 18 million people in the United States simply could not afford to buy car insurance. It was too expensive.

How many of those people chose to drive anyway? You can bet that it was more than a few.

Now, you may say that someone who can't afford insurance also can't afford to drive. It's not a right, after all. That may be true, but people simply do not make the best decisions when they think they can bend the rules without getting caught. When it eventually catches up to them, they'll regret it, but they'll risk it until then.

After the accident, you know things could get pretty complicated due to this other driver's choices. Make sure you know all of the legal steps you will need to take.
